Oklahoma experiences hiring slowdown
OKLAHOMA CITY- The Oklahoma City Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City released its latest issue of the Oklahoma Economist, titled “Hiring in Oklahoma Slows, but Unemployment Remains Low.” This edition uses data from the Kansas City Fed’s manufacturing and services surveys to examine the underlying causes of a historic hiring slowdown in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma firms cite demand-based factors like growth expectations and economic uncertainty as the top restraints on hiring, while fewer businesses cite the inability to find workers than in the past, according to Cortney Cowley, assistant vice president and Oklahoma City Branch executive of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
“Business cycle factors so far have contributed more than structural reductions in labor needs,” she said. “Very few survey respondents reported using AI as a substitute for hiring, but some use it as a complement to increase the productivity of existing workers.”
Cowley said while employment growth in Oklahoma has slowed slightly alongside the sharp decline in the hiring rate, Oklahoma’s job market remains relatively steadier compared to the broader United States.
“Most firms have yet to reduce headcount and the state’s unemployment rate remains low, indicating Oklahomans continue to remain employed even in a less dynamic labor market,” she said. “Although hiring is low compared to historical norms, most firms are maintaining their employment levels and potentially reevaluating specific roles as they are vacated.”
The complete issue is available at www.kansascityfed.org/oklahomacity/oklahoma-economist.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City serves the Tenth Federal Reserve District, encompassing the western third of Missouri; all of Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wyoming; and the northern half of New Mexico. As part of the nation’s central bank, the Bank participates in setting national monetary policy, supervising and regulating numerous commercial banks and bank holding companies, and providing financial services to depository institutions. Wilson pages for Rep. Rick West
OKLAHOMA CITY – Patience Wilson, a senior at Panama High School, paged for Rep. Rick West, R-Heavener, the week of Feb. 2-5, at the Oklahoma State Capitol.
She is the daughter of Rick and Jacolyn Martinez.
Wilson, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in an accident when she was seven, shared her story with West during the week she paged for him. She wrote that her doctors believed she would never talk or walk again after her injury. Two months later, she walked out of the hospital without her wheelchair. Several months after that, she was back at school with accommodations.
She said it wasn’t long before her parents realized she was relearning things faster than expected. “They wanted me to have a push, to do more,” she wrote, “but my doctors did not agree.”
So, the family moved from Dodge City, Kansas to Panama for a fresh start. Wilson said one of her teachers, Jennifer Toney, looked at her case and tested her ability to see what her needs were, placing her in a regular first-grade class with accommodations.
Since then, Wilson said she has been achieving more than was thought possible or expected with her disability.
She’s attained a high school grade point average of 3.96 and is ranked third in her class of 49 students. She’s taking concurrent classes at Carl Albert State College where her college GPA is 3.76. After studying at Carl Albert, she plans to transfer to the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma for a degree in English.
Wilson won a beauty pageant and several Special Olympics track meets and was recognized as the Athlete of the Year for Area 10 in the Oklahoma Special Olympics in 2025. She’s a member of her school’s Quiz Bowl, on the Student Council and Youth Advisory Board and a member of Family Career and Community Leaders of America. She taught herself to play piano using only one hand and played basketball for two years.
Her goal is to become a book editor or an English teacher. She also wants to help people with disabilities “to know that it does not limit them as a person.”
West said, “Patience is a remarkable young woman who has overcome a lot of things in her life. She’s incredibly smart, and she has a heartwarming story to share with others.”
Both West and Patience expressed appreciation for the many teachers at Panama Schools that have helped her reach where she is today. She also thanked her mom and dad and her siblings who she said have been with her since day one after her accident.
Rick West serves District 3 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. His district includes part of LeFlore County.

Tanja Gay Aguilar
Tanja Gay Aguilar of Heavener was born on Oct. 17, 1960 in Paris, Texas to James and Gladys Whitmire and passed away on Feb. 5, 2026 in Heavener at the age of 65.
Memorial service to celebrate Tanja’s life was Wednesday at the Freedom House Fellowship Church in Heavener with Brother Sam Dyer officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home in Heavener.
Tanja passed quietly, leaving behind a family who will forever miss her music, her sharp wit, and her unmistakable presence (which, truthfully, was never subtle). She was a longtime resident of the area and retired from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections, where she worked in the Law Library for 14 years. Tanja was a gifted singer and a wonderful pianist, filling rooms—and sometimes entire the church with music. Through her time at Freedom House Church, she found her purpose again, and her faith and talent became a blessing to many who had the joy of worshiping alongside her.
Tanja was also proudly ornery and never particularly impressed by men. She kept her reflexes sharp and her shin-whacking skills finely tuned, often practicing on any unfortunate soul who wandered too close or tested their luck. Consider it a life lesson delivered swiftly and without apology.
Looking back now, those moments bring laughter first… and then a heaviness of heart. Her music, her stubborn strength, her quick reactions, and her one-of-a-kind personality leave a space that cannot be filled, only smiled about.
Tanja was deeply loved, unapologetically herself, and will be remembered always especially by those who learned to keep a respectful distance.
Survivors are one daughter, Casey Lee Aguilar; two sons Gabriel Lucas “Gabe” Aguilar and wife Jaime, and James Joseph “Joey” Aguilar; two sisters Katherine Beshirs and Gypsy Ann Towne; other loved one Karli Albert – mother of Kenzlee, Kenna, and Lawson; her grandchildren Kaydence, Kalleigh, Wynter, Hayden, Bentley, Gaitlin, Kenzlee, Kenna, Lawson, Rachel, Jaime, Jessie, John, Natalie, Emily and Lillian; numerous great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Gladys Whitmore; and granddaughter, Rayleigh Aguilar.

She was known for her joyful spirit and playful personality, never missing a chance to dance, even jumping in front of cars to shake her booty no matter her age.She was a caretaker by nature, always putting others before herself. A self-proclaimed “collector,” she saved what she believed were good things for her grandchildren. She loved clothes—some might say she had too many—and wherever Debra went, dancing was sure to follow.Above all else, she loved her daughters fiercely and was always there for them, once joking she would put wheels on her feet to get to them if she had to. One of her greatest acts of love was walking all night through freezing rain and cold from Fort Smith just to take her baby girls a coat. You may leave an online message of condolence at www.MalloryMartinFuneralHomeSpiro.com

Ryan was larger than life, a bright light in the world of everyone who knew him. He was a fierce protector of the people he loved and would give the shirt off his back (literally) to anyone in need, even a stranger. If he loved you, he told you, and he meant it. He also found great joy in pestering the people he loved and went to great lengths to make people laugh.
He was known to dive deep into conspiracy theories and had a wealth of knowledge about just about anything.
He was extremely competitive, almost always turning the simplest things into a competition.
Card games were always intense when Ryan was involved; there were always cheating accusations when he didn’t win.
He loved to be outside, especially on the water or around a fire with his brothers. He loved music and loved to sing loudly, confident he could be an American Idol winner. He lived his life in the same way, loudly and with confidence. He was unapologetically himself, quick-witted, and had the best sense of humor.
He adored his wife, Bryleigh, which was apparent to anyone who watched them together. The Lord brought them together in a time when He knew they needed each other. After their first time together, they spent every spare second after that with one another.
She and their boys were the most important things in his world. He loved to wrestle their boys, especially right before bedtime, then wondered why they didn’t want to sleep. When their daddy was home, he was the one to put the boys to bed because mom just couldn’t do the trick when dad was around. When they were all home together, you could find them piled together on the couch.
Bryleigh and Ryan loved to go bowling (he won every time!), going to dinner, and watching movies at home (where he claimed he always picked the best movies).
Ryan lived boldly, loved deeply, and showed up fully for the people who mattered most to him.
Above all else, he adored his wife, Bryleigh, and took immense pride in the family they built together. Being her husband and the boys’ dad was the greatest joy of his life, and that love was evident in everything he did. His laughter, confidence, and larger-than-life presence filled their home and will forever be woven into the memories they carry forward.
While his absence leaves a space that can never truly be filled, his life was rich with purpose and love. The impact he made is not measured by time, but by the devotion he showed to his family and the countless lives he touched along the way. We take comfort in knowing that the same Lord who brought Ryan and Bryleigh together now holds him close, and that his legacy lives on through his boys, the stories shared, and the deep love he leaves behind.
Pallbearers were Derek Moore Sr., Derek Moore II, David Moore, Dillon Moore, Jonathan Moore, and Paul Davidson.
Honorary pallbearers were Duwayne Schiffner, Matthew Moore Sr., Marshall Moore, Matthew Moore II, Tyler Moore and Preston Moore.
