Sooners never trail in win
NASHVILLE, Tennessee. — Oklahoma led by double digits for more than half the game but had to sweat out the final moments in a 92-91 win at No. 15 Vanderbilt on Saturday that snapped a nine-game losing streak and handed the Commodores just their second home defeat this season. The Sooners (12-12, 2-9 SEC) led by as many as 21 points in the second half and went up 82-63 with 3:38 to go before Vanderbilt (19-4, 6-4) made a furious comeback thanks in part to a handful of OU turnovers and missed free throws. But Xzayvier Brown, who entered the game as the SEC’s best free throw shooter, clinched the victory with a pair of foul shots with 3.4 seconds left that put his team up 92-88. Vandy’s Tyler Tanner, who made a 30-foot shot to cut OU’s lead to 90-88 with 5.2 seconds left, also banked in a 3-pointer at the final horn to account for the one-point margin. The win was Oklahoma’s first on the road against an AP top-15 opponent since beating No. 14 West Virginia 91-90 in double-overtime on Feb. 13, 2021. The game also marked the first in at least the last 27 seasons in which the Sooners never trailed against an AP-ranked foe on the road. All five OU starters scored in double figures, as did Dayton Forsythe off the bench. Brown produced a team-high 20 points, including 14 in the second half, and was followed by Nijel Pack with 17, Tae Davis with 14 (all in the first 6:19), Forsythe with 12 (his second most of the season), Derrion Reid with 11 and Mohamed Wague with 10. Jadon Jones came off the bench and contributed eight points, his second most in SEC action.Wague paced OU with eight rebounds while Pack led with four assists and two steals. The Sooners’ 14 turnovers were their second most in SEC play and Vanderbilt converted them into 19 points. But OU shot 53.4% from the field and racked up 40 points in the paint, its most in SEC action, to emerge victorious.Davis scored nine of Oklahoma’s first 11 points and 14 of its first 18 as the Sooners built leads of 11-2 and 26-10. Vanderbilt responded with a 17-4 run to trim its deficit to 30-27 with 5:19 to go in the first half as OU struggled taking care of the ball, but the Sooners countered with an 18-7 burst to build a 48-34 lead at intermission. It marked OU’s largest halftime advantage in SEC play this season and the Commodores’ first halftime deficit at home on the year. The Sooners picked up where they left off to start the second half, opening with a 13-6 run for a 61-40 lead with 15:47 remaining. Brown nailed 3-pointers on OU’s first two possessions and Pack added another at the 16:16 mark. After the 3-pointer on its first trip of the second half, Oklahoma’s lead hovered between 15 and 21 points until 2:27 remained in the contest. OU was ahead by double figures from the 2:56 mark of the first half until the 1:05 mark of the second.Oklahoma’s last field goal of the game was a Forsythe layup that came with 2:20 to go and put the Sooners ahead 84-69. Vanderbilt outscored the Sooners 22-8 the rest of the way.Brown’s 20-point game was his second straight and his sixth in 11 SEC outings. He has scored at least 13 points in 14 of the last 15 games and at least 18 points in 11 of those 15 contests.Pack went 3 for 7 from 3-point range, giving him 15 games this season with at least three triples.Tanner scored a career-high 37 points with the help of 14-for-18 free throw shooting. He added game highs of nine assists and five steals.OU is off until hosting Georgia on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised by SEC Network.

Hogs cruise by Bulldogs
STARKVILLE, Mississippi. – Trevon Brazile scored an SEC career-high 19 points with eight rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots while Darius Acuff Jr. scored 24 points with eight assists to lead #21 Arkansas to an 88-68 victory at Mississippi State Saturday afternoon.
The Razorbacks (17-6; 7-3 SEC) were playing short-handed as D.J. Wagner and Karter Knox were sidelined due to injury.
The win was just the seventh in 29 trips to Starkville for Arkansas, and the first by the Razorbacks at Miss State since 2015, as the team snapped a six-game losing streak at Humphrey Coliseum. However, Razorback head coach John Calipari improves to 22-1 all-time versus the Bulldogs and 10-0 in Starkville. (His only loss to MSU came in the 2021 SEC Tournament.)
In addition to Brazile and Acuff, Billy Richmond III tied his SEC career high with 14 points and Meleek Thomas added 17 points. Nick Pringle grabbed a game-high and season-best 11 rebounds.
With the Razorback injuries, Springdale freshman Isaiah Sealy saw extended minutes and responded with six points and three blocked shots, giving him four rejections for the season.
After a sluggish start that saw the Razorbacks miss their first five shots, the Hogs found their mark, making 12 of their next 14 shots to build a 15-point lead. Over the span, Arkansas went on a 20-2 run and held a comfortable lead the rest of the game. The Bulldogs did get to within seven late in the first before the Hogs closed the half on a 7-0 run. The Hogs started fast in the second half and cruised to the win.
Josh Hubbard led the Bulldogs with 16 points. However, his SEC record of making a 3-pointer was snapped at 69 games dating back to his sophomore season. Achor Achor added 15 points and Jamarion Davis-Fleming had 12.
Arkansas stays on the road to play at LSU on Feb. 10. Tipoff is set for 8 pm (CT) and the game will be on SEC Network. The Razorbacks come home to face Auburn on Valentine’s Day before returning to the road to play at Alabama (Feb. 18).
