Cowboy Baseball Tops DBU
DALLAS – Oklahoma State completed a season sweep of Dallas Baptist Tuesday night with a 15-4 victory over the Patriots at Horner Ballpark.
With their second win over DBU this season, the Cowboys improved to 18-11; DBU is now 16-13.
Colin Brueggemann hit a pair of home runs for the Pokes, with Kollin Ritchie, TP Wentworth and Garrett Shull also going deep.
Kai Fye picked up the win in relief of Wentworth, who started on the mound and at DH. Fyke improved to 2-0 as he worked three innings and allowed just one run while tying a career high with five strikeouts.
The Cowboys fell behind in the first inning as Luke Pettitte smacked a two-run home run to left field.
OSU cut that lead in half in the third. After a perfectly executed hit and run put runners on the corners with two outs, Ezra Essex came in to score on a wild pitch to make the score 2-1.
The Patriots got the run back in the fourth, getting a pair of singles and a double steal of second and third before an RBI groundout extended their lead to 3-1.
Brueggemann made it a one-run game once again in the fifth, leading off the inning with his fifth homer of the season over the wall in center field.
The Pokes seized control of the scoreboard with a six-run rally in the sixth as they sent 11 batters to the plate.
Ritchie got things started with a solo bomb to right field as his 17th blast of the season made it 3-3.
The Cowboys then took advantage of the DBU pitching staff’s inability to find the strike zone. After loading the bases on a single, walk and hit by pitch, Brueggemann and Wentworth drew back-to-back RBI walks. Up next, Shull was hit by a pitch to plate OSU’s sixth run.
The lead reached 8-3 when Brock Thompson ripped a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle before DBU was able to get out of the inning.
The Patriots loaded the bases themselves in the bottom of the inning, doing so with no outs. A sacrifice fly made the score 8-4, but Fyke was able to get another fly out and an inning-ending strikeout that left the bases full to escape further damage.
OSU added insurance in the seventh via the long ball. Brueggemann smacked his second of the night, a two-run shot, and Wentworth followed that with his fifth homer of the season as the back-to-back jacks pushed the Cowboys’ advantage to 11-4. That duo also hit back-to-back homers against DBU earlier this month in the game in Stillwater.
Shull capped OSU’s scoring with a three-run home run to center field in the eighth.
OSU returns to action Friday when the Cowboys open a three-game series against Cincinnati at O’Brate Stadium.
Sooners shut out ORU
TULSA – No. 11 Oklahoma cruised to a 3-0 win over Oral Roberts Tuesday night in Tulsa.
The Sooners (20-8) were propelled by a career night from starting right-handed pitcher Michael Catalano. The sophomore went five innings of two-hit ball with no walks and seven strikeouts. It was both a career-long outing and career-high strikeout number.
Freshman Nick Wesloski was as impressive out of the bullpen, going three innings of scoreless pitching with five strikeouts, both career highs. Junior Isaac Williams finished the job, hurling a scoreless ninth while allowing one hit.
OU junior designated hitter Brendan Brock provided the offense for Oklahoma, hitting a three-run home run in the first inning for his seventh of the year. The bats went quiet on both sides until the ninth when the Sooners tacked on an insurance run. Brock and freshman Alec Blair registered consecutive base hits and junior catcher Deiten Lachance plated Brock on a sacrifice fly to center.
Catalano, Wesloski and Williams combined on OU’s fifth shutout of the season and third game with zero walks. Oral Roberts (14-12) registered just five hits in the game.
Pitchers of Record
Win: Michael Catalano (2-2)
Loss: Brendan Asher (0-2)

Arkansas clipped in extras by Missouri State
SPRINGFIELD, Missouri – No. 17 Arkansas (19-11) was walked off in extras by Missouri State (18-9) in a back-and-forth affair that featured nine lead changes and eight combined homers Tuesday night at Hammons Field, losing 15-14 in 10 innings.
With the loss, the Hogs dropped to 6-2 in midweek games this season. Arkansas previously defeated Tarleton State on Feb. 16 at Globe Life Field, split a double midweek series against in-state foe Arkansas State on Feb. 24-25, took down Oral Roberts on March 3, swept its double midweek series against Northern Colorado on March 17-18 and picked up its second win of the season over an in-state opponent with a win against UCA on March 24 before Tuesday night’s setback.
Four Razorbacks, including Camden Kozeal (4-for-5, 2B, HR, 5 RBI), Zack Stewart (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), Nolan Souza (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) and Christian Turner (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBI), recorded multi-hit games in the loss. Arkansas also blasted four home runs, including Ryder Helfrick’s solo shot, his team-leading ninth of the season, and Souza’s three-run homer in the third inning, Turner’s three-run home run, the first of his collegiate career, in the top of the fifth inning and Kozeal’s grand slam, his eighth homer of the season, in the top of the seventh inning, but could not slow Missouri State’s offense.
The Bears tagged the Razorback pitching staff for 14 runs on 12 hits, including four doubles and four home runs, Tuesday night. Missouri State scored six in second, three in the fourth, three in the sixth and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning before walking Arkansas off with a leadoff home run in the 10th to seal its midweek win.
In relief of starter Steele Eaves (1.0 IP, 4 R, 2 SO), right-hander Jackson Kircher twirled 1.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Parker Coil emerged from the bullpen and tossed 2.2 innings of three-run ball (zero earned) with three strikeouts, while Cooper Dossett turned in 2.1 innings of two-run ball with a career high-tying four strikeouts.
Up next, Arkansas heads to Auburn, Ala., for an SEC weekend series against No. 18 Auburn (20-8, 4-5 SEC). First pitch between the Razorbacks, who are 4-5 in conference play, and Tigers is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, April 2, on ESPN2.
