OU Run-Rules Gonzaga in Series Opener
NORMAN – No. 13 Oklahoma took the series opener over Gonzaga Friday evening in Norman by a final of 14-4 in eight innings.
The Sooners (9-1) were powered by a six-running first inning, highlighted by senior Dayton Tockey’s second home run of the season on a two-run shot. Junior Brendan Brock chipped in his team-leading third homer of the year with a three-run blast in the sixth.
Senior Trey Gambill sealed the run-rule victory with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth after a leadoff single from Deiten Lachance and RBI triple from Jaxon Willits.
On the mound, starting left-handed pitcher Cameron Johnson earned his third win of the season in as many starts. Johnson surrendered a three-run third inning but held Gonzaga (2-6) scoreless in his other four innings pitched, striking out seven and walking none.
Sophomore Trent Collier worked an efficient 1.2 innings, putting down his five batters faced on just 20 pitches, surrendering no runs or hits with one strikeout. Senior Reid Hensley finished the game, hurling 1.1 innings with one strikeout while allowing one run on two hits and a walk.
Barrett, Cowboys roll through Sam Houston
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State extended its winning streak to five with a 5-1 victory over Sam Houston in Friday’s series opener at O’Brate Stadium.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 6-3, while the Bearkats fell to 4-5.
Hudson Barrett took the mound to begin the series for the Cowboys, making his third start of the season. The transfer had a career-day on the mound, pitching seven innings while striking out 10 – both career highs – and allowing just one unearned run to improve to 2-1.
Noah Wech came in to finish game for the Pokes, striking out four hitters over the final two innings to seal the win.
Sebastian Norman and Brock Thompson both went deep on the day, driving in four of the Cowboy’s five runs.
Barrett looked sharp in the first inning, working a clean inning that included a pair of strike outs. He went on to retire the first seven batters he faced before SHSU’s Blake Brown reached on an error to put a man on second with one out in the third. But the southpaw was able to induce a couple of fly outs to escape any damage and finish his third scoreless inning
On the other side, SHSU starter Ryan Peterson faced the minimum through two innings before allowing a leadoff walk to Evan Saunders in the bottom of the third. Terrance Bowen followed suit with another walk to put Cowboys on first and second with nobody out. After Brady Francisco laid down a textbook bunt to put two runners in scoring position for the top of the order, Alex Conover drove in the first run of the game with a groundout to short.
The Bearkats got their first hit of the game when Hunter Alvord led off the fourth with a single. Alvord would advance to third base with one out on an error, but Barrett was able to strand him with a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.
The Pokes finally got in the hit column in the fifth after Saunders legged out an infield single. Bowen and Francisco each followed with singles of their own to load the bases with one out. But Peterson struck out the next two batters to bring his tally to 11 and end the threat.
Barrett continued his dominance in the sixth inning, striking out three to give him nine on the day.
In the bottom of the inning, Norman provided a big swing with a line drive home run over the left field wall. It was the freshman’s second home run of the season.
Barrett returned to the mound in the seventh and picked up his 10th strikeout of the game to set a new standard. Sean Bazmore reached on a two-out single but was erased by a Barrett pick-off move.
The Cowboys started a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a pair of singles from Francisco and Conover. With two on and two out, Thompson sent a ball over the right-center field wall to give the Pokes three big insurance runs and make it a 5-0 game.
Barrett came out to start the eighth inning, but a pair of defensive miscues to open the inning forced the lefty out of the game with two runners on.
Wech entered the game and walked one while also throwing a wild pitch to allow one of the inherited runners to score. But the right-hander struck out the final two batters of the inning to limit the damage and preserve the four-run lead.
Wech worked an easy ninth inning, striking out to two to seal the victory.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 1 p.m.
Razorbacks upended by Mavs
FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – No. 6 Arkansas (7-3) scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning but came up short in the series opener against UT Arlington (3-6), suffering a 4-3 loss Friday afternoon at Baum-Walker Stadium.
Friday’s setback marks the Razorbacks’ first loss in the opening game of a weekend series against a non-conference opponent at Baum-Walker Stadium since 2022 when Arkansas lost the opening game of its non-conference weekend series at home on two occasions, doing so against Illinois State and Southeastern. Arkansas went on to win both series.
UT Arlington’s Caylon Dygert turned in the best pitching performance of his career Friday, tossing 8.2 innings of two-run ball (both unearned) with 11 strikeouts. The Hogs had no answers until the ninth when the Maverick right-hander, who threw 130 pitches in the start, walked Ryder Helfrick with two outs before a fielding error would extend the inning.
The error knocked Dygert out of the ballgame, and the Razorbacks, trailing by four runs, finally broke through against the Maverick bullpen. Kuhio Aloy’s two-RBI double to right center cut Arkansas’ deficit to two before Reese Robinett, the very next batter, lined an RBI double to left center to bring the Hogs within a run of tying the contest at four apiece.
Hayes Melville, who relived Dygert, survived Arkansas’ late rally and earned his first save of the season by inducing a scorching 110-mph groundout from Maika Niu to third base with Robinett, representing the game-tying run, at second.
Gabe Gaeckle started on the mound for the Hogs and worked 5.1 innings of four-run ball with five strikeouts. In relief, Cole Gibler spun 3.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts to give Arkansas the opportunity to rally back in the ninth.
Offensively, Camden Kozeal (2-for-4) recorded the Razorbacks’ lone multi-hit game of the afternoon to improve his season slash line to .364/.488/.818 in nine games played. Aloy raised his team-leading RBI total to 11 this season with his two-RBI double in the ninth, while Robinett collected his team-leading fifth double with his RBI two-bagger in the ninth.
Arkansas, winners of 33 consecutive non-conference weekend regular season series inside the friendly confines of Baum-Walker Stadium, will look to even the series against UT Arlington tomorrow afternoon. First pitch in the second game between the Razorbacks and Mavericks is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, on SEC Network+.

A memorial service is 2 p.m. Monday at the Greenhill Cemetery Pavilion in Cameron with Freddie Edwards officiating.
Kathryn always lived with or by her mother. Kathryn worked in DeQueen, Arkansas at the chicken factory in the 1970’s. Later, they moved to Greenville, Texas. Her mother and step-dad bought a minnow shop there and Kathryn worked there until late 1980’s. She moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas to be with her sister and two nephews.
Kathryn had to go to the nursing home in 2012. She loved her visits with her Aunt Peggy and her children. They sometimes took her shopping and out to eat dinner which she really enjoyed. They would come and have Thanksgiving dinner with her at the nursing home. She was so happy when they came. She loved playing Bingo. Kathryn knew Jesus as her Savior, so we’ll see her again in Heaven.
Survivors are two aunts Peggy Edwards of Cameron and Linda Massey of Antlers; three nephews James Eric Phillips, William “Willy” Marshall, and Billy Joe “B.J.” Hickerson II; one niece, Jennifer (Phillips) Taylor; and many cousins she was proud of.
